A new type of terror approaches

There are terrorists among us.

Not terrorists like those who attacked us on Sept. 11, but ones just as dangerous.

Terrorists who destroy lives, skirt the law and prey on the innocent. These terrorists aren’t just among us here in America either. They are a multi-national force that has been around for thousands of years.

These terrorists are the Catholic Church – and they need to be stopped.

We’re all familiar with the scandal; so much so, in fact, that all one has to do is mention “Catholic priest,” and people instantly know to what scandal you refer.

Recently, the Associated Press reported that a letter surfaced from 2001 in which the current pope, Pope Benedict XVI, praised a French bishop for his cover up of a pedophile priest in his parish.

So why does the Pope, and vicariously the Catholic Church, condone such horrid behavior?

Some cite economical and time restraints, saying it takes a lot of time and money to train a Catholic priest.

That’s fine, I’ll accept that it takes a lot to become a priest. Catholics have lots of posturing, unnecessary rituals that I’m sure a priest must learn. Also, I understand that demand for careers in the clergy is on the decline. Would you want a job boasting low pay, forbids you from having sex and has a one of the worst reputations imaginable?

What I can’t accept is the Catholic Church using its power to hide and protect these child molesters. If the priest in question had a drinking problem or got caught stealing money or maybe got caught with a woman over 18, then I have no problem with the church covering it up and moving the priest somewhere else.

Having a drunk, unruly, womanizing priest would be a lot more entertaining than the regular old Sunday service. It would give the congregation something to talk about for ages, and it would probably make a pretty good sitcom.

But to cover up child molesting? Child molesting? And not even cover it up like, “We’re going to send you somewhere out of the way for a while so you can deal with this,” or, “We’re going to get you into a program and get some help.”

No, instead the Catholic Church moves these sick individuals to another church where they have new victims on which to prey.

Others have defended this cult of cover-ups, the pope’s recently discovered actions, specifically.

The Associated Press reported that Cardinal Dario Castrillon Hoyos told RCN radio, a Colombian station, that “The law in nations with a well-developed judiciary does not force anyone to testify against a child, a father, against other people close to the suspect. Why would they ask that of the church? That’s the injustice. It’s not about defending a pedophile, it’s about defending the dignity and the human rights of a person, even the worst of criminals.”

While laws are in place to protect family members from testifying against each other, if that family member had the degenerate mental disease of being a child molester, then you should care enough about that person to try and get them help – using whatever means necessary.

Also, if you’re a halfway decent person with any sort of working conscience, you don’t want innocent children getting molested. If your close acquaintance has this problem and your solution is to try it out on a new group of kids, then you might as well have stuck your own hand down those little boys’ pants.

And as for the argument of “defending the dignity and the human rights of a person, even the worst of criminals,” what about the dignity and human rights of the children these priests molest - the innocence that they steal, the lives they ruin, the psychological, emotional and physical damage they do to these children?

These priests need to be punished just like anyone else who would commit such a horrible act. They need to be in jail and feel what it’s like to be powerless, to be abused and to be violated just like they violated those children. Even the murderers, what many would consider some of “the worst of criminals,” think child molestation is a vile, unthinkable act.

The fact that we haven’t risen up as a global community and called for the disbandment of the Catholic Church makes me a little disappointed in humanity altogether.

How many more chances does this institution deserve? How can anyone take an institution seriously that identifies itself as a moral guidepost for humanity, then repeatedly commits the most heinous affront of morality known to man? How can anyone pay homage to an institution that is not only involved in this most evil of deeds, but who’s very leader abides and advocates the cover-up of said evil?

This problem has reached epidemic status. Reports of priests molesting children have come in from all over the world. Chile, Sweden, Germany, Mexico, Brazil, France, Ireland, Argentina, Italy, The Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Canada and the good ol’ U.S. of A have all reported cases of sexual child abuse by Catholic priests – and this isn’t even the complete list of countries that have had this problem.

The constant lies and cover-ups, and the sheer volume of this most horrible offense, has led me to my previous conclusion: the Catholic Church is a multinational terrorist organization that must be stopped. It’s had its run, and now it’s time for the pope to turn in his funny hat.

There needs to be an outcry from those involved in the faith. There needs to be an investigation as to why this is such a phenomenon, and there needs to be punishment for those involved – even those who covered their colleagues’ tracks.

It’s your choice Catholics: You can either try to fix it (good luck), drop out, or you can advocate child molestation – your call.

Chuck is a frequenter of the bars, I guess that is why it is ok for him to condone drunks, but not child molestors. His wife is also a Master's student in Psychology. I would stay away from these people. Chuck is nuts!

Ok, I read every single comment from beginning to end. First of all, to those of you who did not have the balls to give your name and hid behind the ANONYMOUS, your opinion doesn’t matter because you don’t exist, you’re anonymous.

Those of you who even had something smart to say, you were doing SO WELL until you misspelled something, misused punctuation or had a grammar error. Damn!! Oops. Guess that means you’re out of the running too.

Funny how when you get rid of all the anonymous, non-existent people and those who need to go back to basic English classes, there aren’t many people left who have anything to say that actually makes any sense, let alone has facts, which you all chastise Chuck for not having. *gasps* Someone who counters an argument claiming that argument has no facts and yet they have no facts of their own!!! SHOCKING!!!

I found the articles he provided the links for just fine. Oh!! Oops!! You were so caught up in your own arrogance you didn’t realize there were two links, did you? Damn. Guess that removes you from the running as well because you had no common sense.

Yes, one article lead to a dead link, but that is not Chuck’s fault. If you look at the link below the name of the article in the yahoo search you will see that it matches the exact link that Chuck provided. The fact that it went dead is not his fault. Take your blinders off and see the truth.

The very first article listed in this search is the article Chuck was trying to provide the link for. When you click on the link, it tells you that the article has expired. The link is correct.

The other link he provided is also correct and no, it has not expired. http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5g0A3glgAtiRZsA0BEQLvoS9lTLVwD9F8FJ905

I also found this on my own. http://news.google.com/news/search?aq=f&pz=1&cf=all&ned=us&hl=en&q=predator+priests+associated+press

Damn. Try again. You can’t discredit someone if you didn’t do your own research.

Also, to those of you who chastised Texas Wesleyan or The Rambler, you should look up a little law called Freedom of Speech. Hmmm. Where have I heard of that before?.... Hmmm.

Let me think… oh…. wait, I got it!!!! Isn’t it in that thing called the, um, the, um, oh yea!!! The First Amendment!! Yea, that’s it!!! And the First Amendment is in, oh crap, what’s that document? Hmmm. It’s a really important document too. Damn. Let me think. Hmmm. Oh yea, I remember now!!! It’s called the United States Constitution!!

Damn. You lose. Sorry.

If I understand you right, anybody that is a pedophile is a terrorist. According to your own opinion, any company or institution that a pedophile works for is a terrorist organization. It's obvious that the Catholic Church isn't the only one that needs to be stopped. If you care so much about child molestation, you'd go after all child molesters. You should know that most of them are outside the Catholic Church. Check it out. Look it up on Associated Press.

I am the first to want to stop child molesters, but hate towards a Christian church is not the way. You've offended me as a Christian. Shame on you, Wesleyan (a Methodist institution) for allowing this attack to be printed. The Rambler just lost a reader, and if this is any reflection of how the student body thinks at that school, I guarantee I will not continue there.

Look, as a Catholic I'm not about to defend the actions of those priests who seduced and raped minors, nor can I defend the bishops and secular political authorities who covered the crimes.

What I can do is defend the Church from utter idiotic bigotry like that displayed here. There are many things that can be said in response to this piece of garbage.

One thing is that the Faith is not reduced to the priests charged with dispensing the sacraments. Christ chose Judas the Traitor, as well as the ten apostles who fled and denied Him. The crimes and failures of those who bear His priesthood do not destroy the power of His sacraments. See Augustine Cntra the Donatists for a deeper explanation of this principle.

Second, the Catholic priesthood is made up of men, and men sin. Protestant pastors sin, as well. Boy Scout leaders and school teachers sin. The rates of sexual abuse of minors in all of those groups is roughly the same as that amongst Catholic priests. The difference in most Protestant churches is that there is nowhere near as much institutional cohesion or anywhere near as high a cultural profile. Most abuse cases in Protestant circles are dealt with (or covered up) on a congregational basis. This does not excuse what the Catholic hierarchy has often done in response to such cases, it is merely to put it in perspective. Almost everyone has at least a mote in his eye. Be careful who you condemn.

One other thing, to Karen below in this thread, who says the Church should sell her patrimony for money. Remember what Judas said to Christ when the woman anointed his feet in perfume? He said the same thing. The Church of Christ is adorned because she is the Bridegroom of the King. Do not ever disparage her for that. Ever. She wears her gown for you, the poor in spirit.

I won't hold my breathe waiting for an apology and retraction of this slur. Texas Wesleyan University ought to be ashamed of such lack of charity.

I, as much as anyone if not more so, abhor child molestation and have many criticisms of the Catholic church, but this piece is one of the most hateful things I have ever read. Complete bigotry aside , obviously Mr. Fain has never taken an introductory writing course. The use of extreme hyperbole, glaring rhetorical fallacies, sophomoric emotional manipulation, and just plain nonfactual content makes this piece worse than most high school comp exercises. This is a complete and utter failure of an essay. I am appalled The Rambler published this. If it came across my desk, I would have filed it away...in the round bin labeled "Trash."

Chuck you are an amazing writer and I applaud you for saying what's on your mind. As far as all these haters go, screw them!

Mr Fain:

the fact that the incredibly bigoted statements you made are your opinion do nothing to negate the fact that they are offensive. A member of the KKK may state as his opinion that non-whites and Catholics (oh yes, we were targeted by the KKK too--look it up!) are inferior and deserving of persecution. Both you and he are entitled to such opinions, but that doesn't mean they aren't offensive, and while you may indicate that such opinions are not the opinions of The Rambler's staff or of Texas Wesleyan, both institutions permitted the publication of an article which referred to nearly a quarter of the U.S. population as "terrorists."

Had you written an article calling for justice for pedophile priests, those who concealed their activities, and their victims, I would have supported you wholeheartedly. You didn't. You said that Catholics are terrorists and that their church is a "multinational terrorist organization"; you implied that church-going Catholics support child molestation.

What's even more offensive is the fact that the Catholic students at Wesleyan are, in effect, being required to support both you and the paper which published this article, since one may assume that your pay and the costs of the paper's publication come out of tuition dollars. If you published this in a regular newspaper, we'd have some recourse. We could cancel our subscriptions; we could, if we really felt strongly about it, tell the paper's advertisers that we would not frequent their businesses until they pulled their ads from the paper. In the case of The Rambler, however, we are being forced to finance a publication which has called us terrorists.

As far as the article to which you linked: the link you offered is "unavailable", and a brief Google search will tell you that the author of the letter in question was Cardinal Castrillon Hoyos, not Pope Benedict XVI. A journalist must check his facts, even if they are offered by the AP press. (If they were--as I said, the article is unavailable.) You are responsible for the accuracy (or inaccuracy) of that which you offer for publication.

All Mr. Fain is trying to do is get the church to recognize the problem instead of pretending it doesn't exist. Child molestation is a sick crime.

Well Chuck, All I can say is "Lesson learned". I am Catholic and I will be the first to admit that we have had bad preist, but there are also bad pastors, policeman, doctors, and etc. There is bad everywhere you look, and when you see an institution as big as our church, there is bound to be a problem or two somwhere along the line.

This is Chuck Fain. Thank you all for reading the Rambler! I'm so glad we live in a country that allows each of us to express our own opinion – no matter how clouded or unreasoned it may be.

First, as far as inaccuracies go, all the information state came from reports published by The Associated Press (found here http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5g0A3glgAtiRZsA0BEQLvoS9lTLVwD9F8FJ905, and here http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100415/ap_on_re_la_am_ca/lt_predator_priests). If you have information to the contrary, or take issue with these reports, I suggest you take it up with The Associate Press. The rest of the article was only my opinion.

Second, I want to make it clear that views I express are my own, not that of The Rambler staff or of Texas Wesleyan. I’m not a Methodist or a Christian – I’m a secular agnostic leaning toward atheism. My opinions have nothing to do with a protestant disdain for Catholicism – only a secular disdain for child molesting.

Thanks again for reading the Rambler!

Now that this bit of foolishness has been linked in the Catholic blogsphere you can expect lots of us chiming in on this. It is unfortunate that the biggest readership you are likely to ever get will be for a piece that is as inaccurate as it is bigoted.

Start with paragraph 6 with the flub of what AP actually reported and the document the writer obviously never read,

When I got the link and description of this bit of trash I was all hyped to go into full defense mode. It is actually rather disappointing that this is the best that you could do. We have been around since 33 AD and we are used to persecution and bigotry from the time we were weak and got fed to the lions to the present where we are the big boys on the block and everybody wants a piece of us.

If we were really "terrorists" would you fight us with something this pathetic?

Rife with inaccuracies and parroting every other anti-Catholic rag out there. YAWN. It's pretty clear that no one is paying attention to how the church is actually handling these cases, nor is there any mention of these horrific crimes in the context of all sex abuse crimes. But in today's so-called journalism, I guess it's okay to ignore all but the "sexiest" facts for the purposes of fueling the latest anti-Catholic rant.
