The Rambler won 14 awards at the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association conference in Kerrville on March 27, more than twice what the newspaper won in 2009.

The entire staff received honorable mentions for general Web site excellence and on-site best of show. The Rambler was entered with division 2 schools such as Texas Christian University for online competitions and with division 3 schools like Tarleton and Texas A&M-Commerce for print competitions.

“I’m really excited about our wins,” said Kay Colley, student media director. “I think that everybody did a really great job and pulled together.”

Individual winners included Jacqueline Wittman, Rachel Horton, Bryce Wilks, Conner Howell, Laura Rosser, Laurence Sheehan and Jonathan Resendez.

Howell, college life editor, received first place in the best slide show category, second place in photo illustration and honorable mention for sports feature photo.

“It feels great because it lets me know that I have some talent,” he said. “Really, it was just knowing what type of photos I took beforehand and the type of quality I was going for, and what the images portrayed from the event.”

Rachel Horton, multimedia editor in charge of the Web site, said she is proud of the staff’s progress for the online newspaper.
“It’s been great to be a part of, and I hope we can do better in the future,” she said.

Jonathan Resendez, Editor-in-Chief, received third place in feature writing and second place for general column writing, as well as a Frank Buckley scholarship and first place for headline writing with Tarrant County College’s The Collegian.
