With the final plan complete, construction of the Jack and Jo Willa Morton fitness center should begin the second or third week in January.

General contractor Thomas Burns is meeting with sub-contractors to take bids throughout mid-December. Ken Dunson, director of facilities and security, said Burns is meeting with five or six plumbers, electricians and air condition technicians to take bids for the fitness center.

After the selection is made, the bids are presented to the university for acceptance.

“We’d like to see it done in eight or nine months but we might push a year before we’re finished,” Dunson said. “Getting permits from the city is the hardest part.”

Once construction begins, all but 32 student parking lot spaces will be fenced off. Dunson said traffic will not be affected alongside the church. The fencing will be removed when construction is complete, opening up 55-60 student parking spaces.

Dunson said inclement weather would be the only thing that may stall completion.
