One look at the psychedelic longhorn guarding the Mellow Mushroom’s entrance and you’ll understand why its Web site proclaims they are “weird and proud of it.”

Though weirdness isn’t all they do well. They also make delicious pizza.

Located at the end of University Drive in the heart of Frog country (just Ram them out of your way), the Mellow Mushroom offers an entertaining atmosphere, a friendly staff and great food and drinks.

A full bar is available featuring daily drink specials for those of us old enough to partake (or those of us with enough foresight to get a fake ID). Stocked with a vast array of brews, Mellow Mushroom features Young’s Double Chocolate Stout, Arrogant Bastard Ale, Monty Python’s Holy Grail Ale, a selection of Shiner, Rhar, and Samuel Adams products and just about any other brew you can think of to wash down pizza.

Oh yes, they also have food.

The tasty appetizers don’t run the normal gamut of pre-meal munchies. Such treats as bruschetta, hummus, meatball appetizer and over roasted wings makes their menu truly special. The handmade pretzels, in salt, garlic and parmesan, or honey and cinnamon sugar flavors – each with its own dipping sauce – are especially delicious. These choices range from $4.50-$7.95.

Mellow Mushroom also serves up calzones such as steak or chicken and cheese ($7.50-$11), as well as an assortment of salads that includes a build-your-own option, which gives you an astronomical amount of salad choices. Salads start at about $4 for “lil” ones and are about $6-$9 for entrée size.

Hoagies, grilled or deli, are also featured in unusual flavors. Choices like the avocado, mushroom club, tofu, tempeh and jerked chicken stand true to the Mushroom’s tradition of weird but awesome tastes. Most are $5.50 for a half or $8.50 for a whole.

Pizza creations are fresh and inventive, allowing for your own personal pizza construction, of course. The Mellow team is happy to add or subtract any topping you’d like on your pie.

And we’re not talking your typical toppings here. Including the usuals, the ingredient list includes more than 50 choices of bases, cheeses, veggies and meats. Pizzas are 10, 14 and 16 inch. Cheese pizzas are $11.75 for a medium and $1.85 for each topping.

Specialty pizzas like “Kosmic Karma” with spinach and sundried tomatoes (medium $18.95) or the “Funky Q Chicken” with barbecued chicken, bacon and caramelized onions (medium $19.75) are just a few of the strangely delicious pizzas offered at Mellow Mushroom.

No matter what your pizza has on top of it, it may be the bottom you remember. The crust, made with sweet molasses, spring water and sprinkled with parmesan before serving, is probably the most delicious thing about the pizza.

Even if you’re usually the type to leave pizza bones on your tray after you’ve eaten all the delicious goody, I promise you’ll want to devour every bit of this pizza – bones and all.

However, if you’re short on time, you may want to seek out a drive-thru. The staff is apparently pretty mellow about getting the food out as well. Great pizza takes time, so bear that in mind before you go.

Mellow Mushroom is located at 3455 Blue Bonnet Circle. Hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Visit them at mellowmushroom.com or myspace.com/fortworthmellowmushroom or call (817) 207- 9677 for more info.
